Chef Maria Gonzalez has been appointed executive chef at Barrio Cantina, a Mexican restaurant in the East Village. She took over the role earlier this month, following the departure of Juan Morales, who led the kitchen for the past three years.
Gonzalez brings over a decade of experience in Mexican and Latin American cuisine. Her previous positions include stints at several New York City restaurants, including a role as sous chef at a Mexican restaurant in Brooklyn. She has also worked in kitchens in Mexico City.
Sources say Gonzalez plans to maintain the restaurant’s core menu while introducing some new dishes inspired by regional Mexican cooking. Barrio Cantina opened in 2015 and has been noted for its casual setting and traditional dishes.
The change in leadership comes as the restaurant navigates shifts in customer demand and staffing challenges common in the city’s dining sector. Barrio Cantina is located on East 6th Street and seats approximately 60 people.
