Gruppo Closes East Village Location, Merges with Spunto at New Nolita Site
The East Village, long known for its eclectic dining landscape, is witnessing yet another shift as Gruppo, a stalwart pizzeria and pasta spot on Avenue B since 1999, shuttered its doors on March 21, 2026. The closure marks a notable moment in the neighborhood’s ongoing evolution as longstanding eateries adjust to changing dynamics.
Gruppo’s operators have confirmed that the restaurant’s operations will merge with Spunto, its sister establishment, culminating in a consolidated venture slated to reopen April 1, 2026. This new iteration will take place at 261 Bowery in Nolita, indicating a deliberate migration from the East Village to a proximate yet distinct neighborhood.
Operating exclusively under the Spunto name, the combined restaurant aims to maintain Gruppo’s well-known offerings, including their signature pizzas and pastas. The updated Nolita location will feature enhancements such as a full bar, aligning with contemporary dining preferences while preserving familiar recipes and flavors.
The move also retains the delivery footprint that Gruppo cultivated over the years, ensuring continuity for its established customer base despite the geographic shift. While Avenue B provided a rooted local identity for Gruppo, the relocation to Bowery reflects a strategic consolidation that blends both brands in a larger, refreshed venue.
Coverage from Eater NY and EV Grieve underscores the significance of this transition, framing Gruppo’s closure not as an end but as part of a broader neighborhood and business realignment within Manhattan’s evolving restaurant scene.
