A recall of 7Up Zero Sugar cans is underway this week after reports that thousands of units contained sugar. The issue was first identified by consumers who noticed a sweet taste in cans labeled as sugar-free. Distribution centers in Queens and Long Island received notices from Keurig Dr Pepper, the company behind 7Up, on Thursday morning.
Affected cans are believed to have entered the market in late September. According to the company, the contamination appears isolated to a specific production run. Retailers including Key Food in Astoria and several Manhattan bodegas have started removing the product from shelves.
The recall comes as many city restaurants and delis rely on diet soda sales, particularly during lunchtime hours. Several store managers in Midtown said they are waiting for replacement shipments. Keurig Dr Pepper has advised consumers to check packaging codes and contact customer service for refunds or exchanges.
Health officials have not reported any injuries, but the recall is a concern for customers with diabetes or those avoiding sugar for medical reasons. City agencies are monitoring the situation and expect additional updates from the manufacturer in the coming days.
