Capitaine Opens in West Village, Replacing Libertine With Seafood Focus

Capitaine, a seafood tavern from Cody Pruitt and Jacob Cohen, opened its doors last Friday at 684 Greenwich Street, on the corner of Christopher Street. The new spot replaces Libertine, their former French bistro, with a menu that leans heavily into shellfish and maritime fare.

The change comes as Pruitt and Cohen, who also run Chateau Royale in Manhattan, sought to pivot away from bistro classics. On opening night, Capitaine’s bar saw a steady flow of neighborhood regulars and curious diners ordering the caviar sandwich, which is priced at $28. Other menu items include fried oysters and a smoked whitefish dip, along with raw bar selections.

The dining room features dark wood paneling and brass fixtures, aiming for a tavern feel that contrasts with the lighter, airier look of Libertine. On Sunday evening, couples and small groups lingered over carafes of white wine and seafood towers, taking advantage of the later sunset and warm weather. The restaurant plans to keep its kitchen open until midnight on weekends, with the bar serving even later.

Capitaine’s team says the new concept was shaped by the rhythms of the neighborhood and a desire for a more casual spot with a focus on seafood. Reservations are available, though several walk-ins were accommodated during the first weekend. In the coming weeks, Capitaine will introduce a late-night menu aimed at service industry workers and locals wrapping up after shifts.
