Dame Team to Open Chippy’s, a Fish and Chips Counter, in the East Village

Chippy’s, a new fish and chips shop from Patricia Howard and Ed Szymanski, is set to open later this summer at 21 East 10th Street. The pair, who run Dame in the West Village, are focusing on their best-known dish and offering it in a streamlined, counter-service setting.

The move comes as the city moves into the hottest stretch of the season, with late-night crowds and daytime foot traffic in the East Village increasing. Chippy’s will serve a pared-down menu centered on fried fish and thick-cut chips, similar to what Dame regulars have come to expect. The restaurant will operate with a casual format and lower price point compared to Dame.

On Monday afternoon, construction workers were spotted inside the space, installing new fryers and prepping the narrow storefront. Howard said by phone that the goal is to serve a steady stream of takeout and quick eat-in orders, catering to students, workers, and late-evening customers passing through Astor Place.

The shop is expected to open in the coming weeks. Hours and menu details have not been finalized. Szymanski, who grew up in England, said the team is sourcing sustainable fish and will offer a rotating selection alongside the classic cod.

Dame, which began as a pop-up, has drawn steady lines for its fish and chips since opening its permanent location. The East Village expansion marks the team’s first attempt at a dedicated, high-volume fish and chips concept.
