Chef Dan Kluger has closed Greywind, his wood-fired restaurant in Greenwich Village. The last service took place on Friday evening. The closure comes amid a string of midsummer shutdowns across the city, as several restaurants and bars pause or end operations during the July heat.

Greywind opened on West 8th Street with a focus on seasonal vegetables and a menu built around a wood-fired oven. The restaurant drew steady neighborhood traffic and industry attention for Kluger’s approach to contemporary American cooking.

On Saturday afternoon, the restaurant’s windows were dark. A handwritten sign thanked guests for their support. Staff were seen packing up kitchen equipment and furniture. Calls to the restaurant line now go unanswered, and the website lists the business as permanently closed.

Rising food costs and slower weeknight business have been cited by some operators as reasons for recent closures. This month, multiple independent restaurants from the West Village to Long Island City have shut their doors. Industry groups point to high summer rents and unpredictable customer turnout during peak vacation weeks.

Greywind’s closing leaves a gap in a block known for independent spots. Kluger, who also runs Loring Place nearby, has not announced future plans. No replacement tenant has been named for the space.
