What do the A/B/C grades mean?: A = 0-13 violation points (clean). B = 14-27 (problems). C = 28+ (serious). Z = grading suspended pending re-inspection. Restaurants must post the latest letter publicly.
What's a "critical" violation?: Critical violations are those most likely to cause foodborne illness — e.g., improper food temperatures, contamination by raw food or unclean equipment, pest activity, or workers not washing hands.
How fresh is this data?: We pull last 90 days of inspections from NYC Open Data (DOH CAMIS) — updated daily. Older inspections aren't shown; recent grades are what's relevant.
Why does my favorite restaurant not show up?: Either: (1) it hasn't been inspected in the last 90 days, (2) it's listed under a different legal name on DOH records (try a partial street match), or (3) it's a non-restaurant food service exempt from CAMIS.
